Students who choose this program generally start working in, among others, the fields of animal health, nutrition, welfare, legislation and environment. They work at trade associations, veterinary practices, universities, research institutes/departments of different companies, government and feed industry. Applied biologists can also be found in the pharmaceutical industry, where they are involved in product testing.
In this program students work in projects that are directly linked to companies that are active in the animal industry. They work with clients from companies that are active in the aforementioned fields, and contribute to solving real-life problems. Besides that, students have the opportunity to specialize themselves in a field of expertise of their own interest, and gather more knowledge and skills about topics which are needed for the job they are aiming for.
There is a wide range of possible study areas, including recognition and prevention of diseases, epidemiology, infection, vaccination, antibiotics, anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal tract, digestion, feed evaluation systems, animal welfare, ethics, policy and legislation, animal stress, emotions and measuring animal welfare.
The themes and methodology of applied research are continuously developing, and include many different aspects. This specialization acknowledges these developments by taking innovation, business, and society into account. Students use their passion and talents to develop their own education, in which they are challenged to immerse themselves into one or several subjects in order to define their place in the professional field.
During the program ‘Applied Animal Sciences’ students will be trained to apply findings from experimental results to the effects of environmental factors (housing, nutrition, legislation, exploitation, etc.) on animal health and welfare. Students are able to explain these effects from the perspective of animal biology and are able to place these in a social and business context.
Besides in-depth knowledge on animal biology, students also work on their personal skills. Depending on their future jobs or studies they are aiming at, students set learning objectives in the fields of communication, self-development, research, statistics, etc.
